Learning New Skills Faster with AI

Most people don't learn slowly because they're not clever — they learn slowly because they study alone, with no feedback and no one to ask. AI removes that loneliness. This talk shows how to turn any AI into a private tutor that drills, explains and corrects you.

The problem

Skills are the new currency, but the old way of getting them is broken for most South Africans. Courses are expensive. Bootcamps want fees in dollars. Textbooks explain things once and move on. If you get stuck on page 40, there's no one to ask — so you give up. Meanwhile employers want coding, data, design, marketing and trade skills you can't easily get at home. People spend months "trying to learn" something and quietly abandon it, not because the goal was too big, but because the path had no guide and no feedback loop. Watching tutorials feels like progress, but you forget most of it within days.

How AI solves it — real-world application

Treat the AI like a tutor sitting next to you, not a search engine. Tell it: "You are my Excel tutor. I'm a beginner. Teach me one skill at a time, quiz me after each one, and don't move on until I get it right." Now it explains, tests you, and adapts to your level. The proven techniques are: ask it to explain a concept three ways (simple, with an example, and with an analogy); have it generate practice problems and mark your answers; use the "teach it back" method, where you explain the topic to the AI and it corrects your gaps; and ask for a week-by-week learning plan. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude do this for free, and you can practise conversation, code, or job interviews out loud.

These are indicative ranges, not promises — outcomes depend on what you learn and how you apply it. The first return is on you: a skill that used to cost R5 000–R15 000 in courses, learned for the price of data. The second is a service. Once you've used these methods to learn a skill well, you can teach it: online tutoring or skills coaching realistically runs R100–R250 per hour in South Africa. Just 5 hours of tutoring a week at R150 is about R3 000 a month. Package your method as a short "learn X in 30 days" guide or small group class and it scales further. And the new skill itself — say data or marketing — can lift your earning power far beyond that.
