When Elihle was 11 years old in Zwelitsha, he made a promise to his visually impaired grandmother. Today that promise lives as Spectacles4TheBlind SA โ AI-powered smart glasses that help blind and low-vision people navigate the world independently, in their own language. This is a story about building technology that serves the people you love.
The problem
In South Africa, hundreds of thousands of people live with serious visual impairment, and many of them in townships and rural areas cannot afford the expensive imported aids that exist overseas. A simple walk to the shop, crossing a busy street, or recognising a face becomes a daily challenge that costs people their independence and dignity. On top of that, most assistive technology only speaks English โ useless to a grandmother who thinks and lives in isiXhosa. The people who most need help are the ones the technology has always left behind.
How AI solves it โ real-world application
Spectacles4TheBlind uses AI built into ordinary-looking glasses. A small camera sees the world, AI describes what is in front of the person โ obstacles, signs, faces, money, surroundings โ and speaks it aloud through a voice the wearer can understand, in their own South African language. Modern AI can now recognise images, read text out loud, and hold a natural conversation, all things that used to require costly specialist equipment. By combining these affordable AI building blocks with deep care for the user, Elihle created something locally relevant and life-changing. The innovation was strong enough to be shortlisted among the Top 150 startups globally โ proof that purpose-driven African innovation belongs on the world stage.

These numbers are indicative of the potential, not a promise โ impact ventures grow slowly and depend on partners and funding. Assistive technology is both a mission and a market. A locally made accessibility device could be offered far cheaper than imported ones, and disability grants, NGOs, and government accessibility programmes are real sources of support. Beyond product sales, the skills earn directly: building accessibility features or multilingual voice tools for other organisations might bring R4 000 to R10 000 per project. A small social enterprise serving even 20 to 40 users a month, plus a couple of project clients, could realistically build toward R10 000 to R25 000 monthly โ while changing lives. Purpose and income can grow together.
