The No-Code AI Builder's Journey

A 21-year-old's story of building real, paying AI products on no-code platforms โ€” proof that you can ship a product without a computer science degree.

You don't need to be a programmer to build software anymore. This talk follows a 21-year-old who builds real AI products โ€” the kind people pay for โ€” without writing traditional code, using no-code tools and a lot of hustle.

The problem

For decades, building an app meant years of learning to code, or paying a developer R50,000+ you don't have. So thousands of brilliant young South Africans with real ideas โ€” a delivery app for their township, a booking system for local hair salons, a tutoring tool โ€” never got past the idea stage. The gatekeeping wasn't talent. It was access. Coding felt like a locked door.

How AI solves it โ€” real-world application

No-code platforms now let you build by dragging, dropping and describing what you want in plain English โ€” and AI does the heavy lifting underneath. The young builder in this session combines:

  • Bubble, Glide or Softr to build the app's screens and logic visually
  • Make or Zapier to connect everything and automate the boring work
  • AI APIs (Claude, OpenAI) plugged in to add the "smart" part โ€” a chatbot, a document summariser, an auto-reply system
  • Lovable or v0 to generate working app interfaces from a simple description

The workflow is: describe the problem, build a rough version in a weekend, put it in front of 5 real users, fix what's broken, and only then worry about scale. The AI isn't just inside the product โ€” it's also his teammate, explaining errors and suggesting fixes as he goes.

Skills you'll learn

  • Building a working app on a no-code platform from scratch
  • Plugging AI into a product to make it genuinely useful
  • Automating tasks with Make/Zapier instead of doing them by hand
  • Validating an idea with real users before spending money
  • Using AI to debug and learn as you build
  • Pricing and launching a simple digital product

Where to use them

  • Township and small-town entrepreneurs digitising local services
  • Students building a portfolio project or final-year idea
  • Existing small businesses wanting a booking or ordering app
  • Side hustlers automating admin so they can focus on customers
  • Anyone who has an app idea but "can't code"

What it can earn you (potential value)

Framed clearly as potential, not a promise โ€” but no-code is one of the fastest paths from skill to income. You can build apps and automations for other businesses, or build your own product and charge a subscription.

Example: build simple booking/admin apps for 5 local businesses at R1,500/month each to maintain = ~R7,500/month recurring, plus a R6,000โ€“R15,000 once-off build fee per project. Or launch your own tool and get 100 users paying R99/month = ~R9,900/month. Income grows with each app you ship โ€” and your first one teaches you most of what you need.
