It's aimed at first-year Unisa Computer Science (COS1501, COS1511, MAT1503, MAT1512), but the method works for any subject.

Why it works (this isn't a gimmick)

Your brain remembers things that are emotional, visual, and connected to what you already know. That's why you can recall a fight scene from a manhwa but forget a formula five minutes after reading it. When you tie a new idea (a derivative) to a strong existing memory (a blade's speed at the instant of impact), you give it a hook to hang on. This is a real, well-known learning technique β€” analogy and "elaboration."

The bonus: murim (martial-arts) stories are secretly about the same thing maths is about β€” mastering fundamentals before advanced techniques, building power step by step, and disciplined daily training.   2. One topic, one analogy, then move to real questions. Don't spend the whole session world-building.
  3. Use it most when you're stuck or bored. When a topic feels dead, the analogy revives it. When it already makes sense, just practise.

Things to watch out for

  1. The exam is plain and closed-book. Themes are training wheels β€” make sure you can solve problems in normal notation without the story.
  2. AI gets maths wrong sometimes β€” verify. Differentiate to check integrals; multiply a matrix by its inverse to check it; substitute answers back into equations. The story being fun doesn't make the maths right.
  3. Don't let story details replace the syllabus. Your marks come from the Unisa study guide, tutorial letters, and prescribed books.
